About Our Story

Coal Ash Institute of India is a not-for-profit registered professional society having its registration No. S/78004. It was registered under the West Bengal Society Registration Act 1961 in September 1994. The Institute was founded with the objective of acting as a knowledge centre for protecting the society and environment from pollution emanating from coal combustion products originating in thermal power plants and various process industries.

- Around 1996-97, CAII sent a questionnaire to TPS all over India with a view to obtain authentic data regarding ash-generation and utilization. The response was reasonably good and the Institute published those data in its News Letter.
- Around 1997-98, CAII sent questionnaires to brick field owners of West Bengal and all over India to identify the bottlenecks in the utilization of coal ash in brick manufacturing by conventional method. Unfortunately, the response was poor. However, one important feedback was non-availability of coal ash for brick manufacturers.

Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India’s draft Notification in 1999 proposed ban on excavating top-soil within 50 Kms radius of TPS for brick making. On 1st. March, 1999, CAII objected to the same. Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India in their final 1999 notification dropped the provision.

CAII also identified that brick-fields using river-silt were not in a position to use ash in terms of Ministry of Environment & Forests, Government of India’s notification no : S.O. 763 (E) Dated : 14.09.1999. It was gathered that some PCBs waived the mandate in subsequent course of time.

Need for impressing upon environment friendly disposal management of ash was focused by CAII, as utilization potential of coal ash in the country was less than 20% during 2000-01.

CAII interacted with RDSO (Lucknow), ER, SER & RITES on prospect of using coal ash in rail embankments. They agreed to consider it. Subsequently, SER executed 3.50 Kms rail-track along Tamluk - Digha rail link in West Bengal with application of coal ash in the year 2001.

Going through the data of ash generation received from TPS, CAII noted considerable inconsistency. It was observed that those figures were generally arrived at arbitrarily. Therefore, it was decided to formulate a simple and reasonably accurate methodology for assessing yearly ash generation of individual power stations. Around 2000-2001, a proposal was prepared and sent to all State Electricity Boards and Independent Power Producers for their comments. In the backdrop of comments received, the proposal was modified and widely circulated by the Institute. Around 2003, as a follow-up measure, CAII had sent another questionnaire to find out whether the methodology recommended was serving its purpose effectively, where feedback are being received.

During 2003, CAII floated questionnaire inviting information on existing Management of Coal Ash in TPSs and asking plan for its suitable pragmatisation, where feedback are being received.

CAII organized a decennial anniversary lecture by Dr. T.R. Naik, Professor, Wisconsin University, USA in the year 2004.

CAII organized decennial anniversary Exhibition and Symposium on “Fly Ash as an Emerging Industrial Material” in April 2005 at Kolkata jointly with TIFAC, New Delhi.

CAII mooted a proposal for setting-up 'State Level Coal Ash Mission' was conceived during 2007 and made available to all concerned for consideration.

China along with India being the largest producers of coal ash worldwide, CAII predicted the need for establishing meaningful interactions between the two countries in the year 2007 and the same is being pursued.

CAII organized a Seminar – cum- Exhibition titled Asia Pacific Conclave on Coal Combustion Products at Kolkata during February 2007, wherein 7 overseas countries participated.

CAII organized a National Conference on “Use of fly ash in agriculture and forestry” at Kolkata during August 2009.

CAII organized a Sino – Indian Initiative for Sustainable Management of Coal Ash in association with China Association of Resource Comprehensive Utilization during January, 2010 at Kolkata.

CAII organized the second Asia Pacific Conclave on “Fly ash based geo-polymer binders, concretes and other building materials” in collaboration with West Bengal Pollution Control Board and Indian Concrete Institute at Kolkata during December, 2013.

CAII became a member of the prestigious World Wide Coal Combustion Products Network [WWCCPN] in the year 2016, which is a collaboration amongst 12 international organizations to promote, co- ordinate and inform the public, industry and governmental entities about the beneficial environmental, technical and commercial uses of coal combustion products [CCPs].

CAII organized the third Asia Pacific Conclave on “Dry Extraction and Effective Utilization of Bottom Ash” and “Technological Advances in other Coal Combustion Products” and “Emissions in Thermal Power Plants” during March 2017 at Kolkata.

CAII had forecast before any other institution in the country that :-
(i) Ash will contribute to increase employment potential;
(ii) Ash will help to eliminate poverty;
(iii) Ash will be 'FOR ALL' and 'FOREVER'.
